s.Pz.Abt. 501 Tigers in "Afrika"

schwere Panzer Abteilung 501

s.Pz.Abt.501 Unit markings seen on their Tiger I's

Tigers of 501... The Myth Begins...  Loading at Fallingsbostel...

Note that a Panzer III's 'Rommelkiste' is mounted on this "Secret Weapon" Tiger I with Production #250014

Did it end up in Africa or Russia??? We do now know...

HQ Doorway Entrance Shield (St = Stabs)

1 Abteilung is Loading at Regio de Calabria, Italy and headed to Africa...2./Abt. in S. France

Tiger 112's Other End... change in viewpoint of loading procedure...

Censored Photograph Printed in German Newspapers to Disguise the "Real" 88 KwK 36 Gun from the Allies...

Note: Muzzle Brake is painted out in propaganda photo but seconds later is shown attached and muzzle brake cover added... the muzzle brake does not actually attach like the painted on ring device so the photograph is humorous to those that study the history of the Tiger I ... this is a photo at 142's arrival in Tunis, Tunisia in November, 1942.

Muzzle Brake Cover with Prod. #250015

Production #250015

The chin straps holding the helmets to the Smoke Dischargers is the giveaway for this tank's identity...

Base painted vehicle (not repainted in Olive Drab US paint as some writers have stated or in Italian paints) The original color is exactly what the orders were for Desert service vehicles for October, 1942... unit could, at option of commander could select  what was perfect for the South of France and then Tunisia!

Notice the Multi-Colored Man Painted near the weld seam bead below the 2 in the number 142 which is in Red & White numbers and this is not a scratch or chip in the negative... the figure is even more clear in higher resolution... Jean Restayn has stated that these numbers are white outline only... simply do not personally believe it is true!

Series of 141

Battle tracks now installed and ready to go... (Jean Restayn has said that this is 141)

Soon readers can see many more pictures of 141 having its engine changed at "Tiger Support"

122 Series

Then 122 has both tracks damages by mines...

131 Series

501 Tiger #131 with Captured US M3 Halftrack and trailer with the road wheel to fix its 'brother tank'

Inadequate road wheels kept several Tigers from being put back into service... 'spares' were a major problem...

131 and 132 Together

132 Series

501's Second Company finally arrives in January... Tiger 243 is the second Tiger.

Tiger 243 (Restayn misnumbered this Tiger in his book "Tigers in the West"... called it 224 and then painted it as 241) is pictured above and below... notice the 22 'Jerrycans' on the turret and their colors to properly match as the same vehicle..

Tiger 724 taking a break... identified by its 6 kill rings... and other features...

Tiger I 724 at the Roman site of El Jem

Series 732

Tigers of 501... The End...

Tiger I's 823 & 833 blown up by crews to prevent capture... members now of 8 Kompanie, 7.Panzer Regiment, 10.Panzer Division lost during Operation "Ochsenkopf"

"Colorized picture of #142"

Note: This Color Photo is a FAKE as the coloration is applied onto the top of a Black & White photo... rubber on wheels and the lack of green on plants and also no colors in flowers blooming in weeds! Many pre-war & wartime postcards were done with this "hand colored" technique ... some theorists ascribe the "Olive" tigers to this... thin Dark Yellow  paint sprayed over RAL 7021 DunkelGrau gives you Olive...!!!

"Real" Color photo of Tiger I  in Sicily... Notice the "Mounted" Puppet Doll

'Hippo' Tiger I "REAL" Color Photo from the "Hippos" in base Panzer gray with gray-green overspray as reference for base paint color used and time frame.

"REAL" Color and merger of  Photos to compare color accuracy

111.12.42

First employment of 3 TIGERs and 4 Pz.Kpfw. IIIs of the 1st company (Hauptmann von Nolde) starting from an assembly area 7 km east of DSCHEDEIDA brings relief for own forces (9 US tanks knocked out). The company commander is killed in action. Oberleutnant Deichmann takes over, destroys 2 British tanks before he himself is killed by a sniper.

tI2.12.42

Kampfgruppe Lueder (with 1 TIGER and 5 Pz.Kpfw. IIIs) is ordered by CO of the 10th Panzer Division to attack TEBOURBA from the north via CHOUIGUI. It stops enemy breakthrough to the west (6 STUARTs and 4 Pak, 3 Pz.Kpfw. IIIs destroyed). Due to the weak combat morale of the accompanying infantry, the attack comes to a stand-still.

()3.12.42

The attack is continued after the subordination of two Grenadier companies to the last combat-ready TIGER and two Pz.Kpfw. IIIs. Encirclement of TEBOURBA after 3 additional TIGERs (unloaded in BIZERTA) are assembled south of EI BETHAN.

During operation "Eilbote I" 7 tanks and more than 30 guns are destroyed. After several night road marches, the 1st company arrives at an assembly area near ZAGHOUAN. The 2nd company repels British attacks south-west of PONT-DU-FAHS but suffers severe losses. As a result of Allied success, Kampfgruppe Weber is built up again for operation "Eilbote II". 11 TIGERs and 14 PIlls operational. The tanks of the battalion are split between the two attack groups (IInd battalion Panzergrenadier Regiment 69 and Gebirgsjager Regiment 756). Strong anti-tank defense and minefields bring the attack to a standstill. For the first time, the armor of 2 TIGERs is penetrated (one tank is burnt out and has to be blown up during the following night). Afterwards, the TIGER group is withdrawn.
