United Kingdom / Commonwealth Sherman Types

Sherman 75mm Types in Commonwealth Service by "NACHT"

AANA Research Fellow "~Dan~" is working up drawings of the Sherman...

The following is a list of basic British Sherman types and their common British Designations versus US Designations:

  • Sherman I : M4 with 75mm gun
  • Sherman Hybrid I : M4 with cast glacis plate and 75mm gun
  • Sherman IB : M4 with 105mm howitzer
  • Sherman IBY : M4 with 105mm howitzer and 23 inch track
  • Sherman IC : M4 with 17 pounder gun (Firefly Variant)
  • Sherman II : M4A1 with 75mm gun
  • Sherman IIA : M4A1 with 76mm gun
  • Sherman lIB : M4A1 with 105mm howitzer
  • Sherman IIC : M4A1 with 17 pounder gun (Firefly Variant)
  • Sherman III : M4A2 with 75mm gun
  • Sherman IlIAY : M4A2 with 76mm gun and 23 inch track
  • Sherman IV : M4A3 with 75mm gun
  • Sherman IVA : M4A3 with 76mm gun
  • Sherman IVB : M4A3 with 105mm howitzer
  • Sherman IVC : M4A3 with 17 pounder gun (Firefly Variant)
  • Sherman V : M4A4 with 75 mm gun
  • Sherman V (Guards) : M4A4 75mm gun plus fitted with Typhoon rocket launcher rail projectors
  • Sherman VC Firefly :  M4A4 with 17 pounder gun (Other Chassis Sub-Variants Also Called Firefly)
  • Sherman VII : M4A6 with 75mm gun
  • Sherman VIIC : M4A6 with 17 pounder

Note: Wide or 23 inch Track variants... Sherman lIlY and IlIAY had horizontal volute spring suspension (HVSS) with wide track although delivered these were not believed used in action by the British. Many of the Sherman IlIAY's were purchased by the Canadian Army at the conclusion of hostilities where they were used for training and some of them were even gutted out to be used as armoured personnel carriers.

Sherman M4/M4A1 Versus M4A2 Basic Details

M4A1 Lima Locomotive Works production line and how the Sherman M4A1's were prepainted and marked with a Tri-Color flash that is Red/White/Blue! Also two color camouflage! The fluorescent lighting has caused the red to show nearly as white and is a good proof for the different colors being applied in the markings for this Tri-Color flash.

Many more Technical Manual drawings and photographs of the engine packs, and details for the variants are included in each of the various Sherman production types we will explore. M4 Welded hull & Composite 75mm, M4A1 75mm, M4A2 75mm, M4A3 75mm, M4A4 75mm, M4 & M4A3 105mm Variants, Sherman 76mm, and Firefly Variants

To Compare the M4 (Welded Hull)/M4A1 (Cast Hull) 9 cylinder Wright 'Cyclone' Gasoline Engine power with the more common (to the British) M4A2...
